North Korea has threatened to beef up its military‚ just days after it missed a deadline to declare its nuclear programs.
But as our Kim Duyeon explains Pyeongyang's latest brinksmanship doesn't appear to be prompting any serious concerns.
Just a day after the U.S. announced it will send its nuclear envoy to Asia to give the six-party talks a push‚ North Korea says it will boost its war deterrent.
Rodong Shinmun‚ a news organ of the communist party‚ published a commentary Friday saying quote ''We will further strengthen our war deterrent capabilities in response to US attempts to initiate nuclear war.'' end quote
The comments also come as the regime failed to declare its nuclear programs by December 31st under last October's six-party deal.
North Korea watchers see the latest threat as a typical Pyeongyang reaction when it believes the regime is not being treated properly.
In a separate report by the country's official news agency the North said earlier that it has slowed down the pace of disabling its nuclear facilities because it felt the other parties to the six-way dialogue were not providing matching economic aid in a timely fashion.
Diplomats involved in the six-party talks are downplaying the severity seriousness of North Korea's missed deadline‚ saying twists and turns are common when dealing with the nuclear issue.
The latest comments came from host China‚ which said it did not see a major problem in the larger scheme.
To press US aims Washington's chief nuclear envoy Christopher Hill will swing through this region‚ stopping in Tokyo‚ Seoul and Beijing in that order beginning Monday.
US officials say his plans so far do not include a trip to North Korea.
Some sources are not ruling out the possibility of convening another round of six-party talks soon after Mr. Hill's Northeast Asia tour.
But that may depend on the results of his trip and whether progress is made on receiving an inventory of North Korea's nuclear stockpile.
