Now regarding another North Korean issue that has the world's attention.
North Korea's traditional ally China has issued its most authoritative statement yet‚ urging Pyeongyang not to go ahead with a suspected missile launch.
Kim Min-jung reports.
China has made its highest level statement yet‚ on a possible missile launch by its longtime ally and neighbor‚ North Korea.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said North Korea's missile plan would only aggravate regional tensions‚ urging other parties involved to be prudent.
WEN JIABAO‚ CHINESE PREMIER: "We hope that the various parties will proceed in the greater interest of preserving stability on the Korean peninsula and will refrain from taking measures that might worsen the situation on the peninsula."
Visiting Australian Prime Minister John Howard asked the Chinese leadership for greater influence on North Korea‚ saying a provocative behavior from any side would deepen mistrust that already exists.
In the U.S‚ Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said North Korea has taken "worrisome" steps in apparent preparation for a launch.
Visiting Australian Defense Minister Brendan Nelson said at the Pentagon‚ that his country will strongly support the U.S. in the case of a missile test.
Though he did not specify the U.S. measures‚ he appeared to be referring to using a U.S. missile defence system to shoot it down.
Meanwhile‚ Tokyo says it is gathering intelligence and is now "prepared" for the possible launch of North Korea's advanced Taepodong-2 missile‚ though it admitted it doesn't have the capability to bring it down.
FUKUSHIRO NUKAGA‚ JAPANESE DEFENSE MINISTER: "We cannot sit idly by. We are dispatching Aegis-equipped warships and reconnaissance planes. With these measures we are doing our utmost to monitor the situation."
Pyeongyang's missile threat is not a first for Japan‚ which saw a North Korean missile fly over its northern part and plunge into the Pacific Ocean in 1998.
